If you have rewatched Kpop Demon Hunters over and over since the movie premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025, you're not alone. And if you're wondering if we'll get a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel soon, you're also not alone.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released by Netflix, Kpop Demon Hunters has been stealing finger hearts left and right since its premiere. The movie, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, follows the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are part of K-pop supergroup HUNTR/X by day and demon hunters by night, on their quest to protect humanity from “an ever-present supernatural threat.” The latest threat? A rival boy band called the Saja Boys, made up of five demons in disguise with an ulterior motive.

Praised for its animation style, plot, and music, Kpop Demon Hunters has become a phenomenon with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and people want more. Below, find out everything we know so far about the future of the IP, including what the directors (and Netflix) have said about a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel.

What have the Kpop Demon Hunters directors said about sequels?

Kpop Demon Hunters wrapped Jinu and Rumi's stories rather nicely, so it's unlikely that we will get a continuation of that story — if you've watched the movie, you know why — but it does look like it might not be the last we see of the universe they built.

Speaking to ScreenRant, the movie's directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, opened up about the future of Kpop Demon Hunters and revealed that there are various avenues they already have in mind to keep the IP alive.

“There are always side stories, and there are things we've thought of while making this one,” Kang teased. “There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore in [sequels].”

What could the Kpop Demon Hunters sequel be about?

NETFLIX

Though Kang told ScreenRant that there are lots of pockets to be explored, it seems that one in particular is calling her name, at least for the movie's potential first sequel, and that is giving fans more of a peek into Zoey and Mira's journey to becoming Demon Hunters. We obviously got to learn a lot about Rumi's upbringing in the first movie, but we only got tiny peeks at the lives of her companions.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes," Kang told Variety. “This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”

Has Netflix confirmed a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel?

NETFLIX

At the time of writing, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed whether KPop Demon Hunters could get a sequel — or sequels — just yet. However, there is hope. Not only is the movie achieving critical acclaim, but it has also gotten greater viewership numbers for the streamer.

During its first week on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters debuted at No. 2 on the English Films List with 9.2 million views. During its second week, it rose to No. 1, with an additional 24.2 million views, reaching the Top 10 in all 93 countries the streamer tracks. In its third week, the film remained at No. 2 and added 22.7 million more views.

It wouldn't be the first time that Netflix has given the green light to carry on a limited release based on high performance. Just take a look at Squid Game, which just released its third and final season on the streamer.

When could a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel premiere?

NETFLIX

This is where things get a little tricky. If you are a fan of animation, you'd know that production times are slightly longer for this medium, as each frame has to be worked on individually. However, if the movie does get greenlit for a sequel, the timeframe could be quicker given the public's interest.

Speaking to Variety, Kang revealed she actually pitched the idea for Kpop Demon Hunters seven years ago, and she had been reportedly working on developing the concept for two years prior. Sony announced the movie was officially in development in March 2021, which means it took over four years for the final product to reach our screens.

For reference, the animated Spider-Verse franchise, which is also a Sony title, debuted its first film, Into the Spider-Verse, in December 2018 after initially being announced in 2015. The second film, Across the Spider-Verse, premiered in 2023. The sequel reportedly started development in 2018 before being announced in November 2019. Animation then began in June 2020. A third installment, called Beyond the Spider-Verse, is slated for a June 4, 2027, release, being pushed from an initial 2025 release due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Although the mix of 2D and 3D animation styles in Spider-Verse is more time-consuming, the timeframes should serve as a rough guideline for what to expect if Kpop Demon Hunters receives the sequel treatment. Though Kpop Demon Hunters is mainly anime-inspired 3D and CG, realistically, we'd probably be looking at at least a two-year wait.

Would a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel mean new music?

We sure hope so. One of the biggest selling points of the movie has been its soundtrack, so if the movie gets a sequel, we would likely get another slew of bangers and potentially even more K-pop idols doing their own covers — after all, TWICE's Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung did their own version of “Takedown” for the soundtrack.

The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack shot up from No. 8 to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart in its second week, over KATSEYE's Beautiful Chaos and Karol G's Tropicoqueta. With the feat, it has officially become the highest-charting soundtrack of 2025. It's also the second-highest-charting soundtrack for an animated movie ever, only surpassed by Disney's Encanto, which spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2022. Streaming aside, Netflix is also reportedly submitting HUNTR/X's “Golden” for awards consideration.
